This archaeological park was the epicenter of the Inca empire that was destroyed by the Spanish in the late 1600s. Today, it is the site of another conflict. The descendants of the Inca want to modernize their communities that are within the archaeological zone. Conversely, the Ministry of Culture wants to keep the site intact to preserve the ancient architecture and artifacts.
Thus, deep disagreements on how to utilized this ancient site exist between site officials and locals. This conflict threatens both ancient heritage and the modern day Peruvian people.
This project is dedicated to understanding the values of each side through ethnographic film.
ON-SITE EXPEDITIONS is a field school for both university students and adult explorers who want to learn about world heritage sites. Selected adult participants will join professional archaeologists and anthropologists on their research sites to experience working on an active dig, exploring indigenous cultures and gaining knowledge about world heritage. Graduate students, recommended by various universities, will be provided scholarships to attend six week hybrid field programs to learn both archaeological field work and visual anthropological techniques.
